25 Years On Set: Why I Built My Own Makeup Kit Bag

Caitlin Tanner, co-founder of Moth

I've worked on set for twenty-five years, across film and television in the UK. I've reset kits in the mud, in the back of vans, on a time code that gave me sixty seconds and not one more. In all that time, I never found a bag built for the job.

Watch the story below:

Most bags in this industry are built for beauty counters: nice, light, flat surfaces, all the time in the world. On set, none of that applies. You're crouched by a monitor, or halfway up a hillside, or working through rain that wasn't on the call sheet. Your kit has to be ready before you are, every time, without you thinking about it.

So I built the one I actually needed. Moth is a full system, not just a bag: a magnetic tray that keeps your most-used tools within reach, a trolley for the days your back needs the help, decant bottles, an all-weather cover. Everything sits where your hand expects it to be.
